You can also use this palette to enter Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean characters, as well as characters from other languages. You can insert special characters, such as mathematical symbols, letters with accent marks, or arrows and other 'dingbats,' into your documents using the Character Palette. Look down the column on the left to find the mathematical symbols. To check it out click on the desktop and from the edit menu select 'special characters'. There are tons of characters to choose from.
You can drag symbols into OS X apps using the character palette.
